A tilt-and-turn window has one handle and two functions. Turn it ninety degrees and the sash tilts inward at the top for secure ventilation. Turn it a hundred and eighty and the whole sash swings inward like a door. It is the standard operable window across Germany, Austria and Scandinavia — and it is almost unavailable in Toronto.

Why it seals better than a casement

A casement window is pulled shut by a crank turning against a friction hinge, and it seals on a single gasket. It works. It is the most common good window in Canada.

A tilt-and-turn is closed by a multi-point gear — one handle movement drives locking cams to as many as eight points around the whole perimeter of the sash, drawing it evenly onto three compression gaskets. Nothing is relying on hinge friction. Nothing is sealing on one edge.

That difference shows up in one number, and it is the number that determines whether you feel a draft at the sill in February: air infiltration. Ask any window company for theirs. Most will change the subject.

Both columns are honest. If you want interior blinds tight to the glass and a fly screen you can reach, a casement is the better window for you and we will tell you so.

Fixed and picture units

No hardware, no gasket line, no air leakage path — a fixed unit posts the lowest U-value in any system, always. Specify them alongside operable windows, not instead of them: one tilt-and-turn in a room handles the ventilation, and the rest of the wall can be glass.

Common questions

Are tilt-and-turn windows better than casement windows?
On air infiltration and security, yes, and the reason is mechanical. A casement is pulled shut by a crank against a friction hinge and seals on one gasket. A tilt-and-turn is driven shut by a multi-point gear that pulls the sash onto three compression gaskets at up to eight locking points around the perimeter. That is a fundamentally tighter closure. A casement is easier to fly-screen and cheaper to buy. Those are the trade-offs.
Do tilt-and-turn windows open inward? Doesn't that waste space?
They open inward, and yes, that is the real cost. You cannot put a full-width curtain, a deep sill display, or a bed headboard directly against a tilt-and-turn that you intend to swing open. Most people never swing it open — the tilt position handles ninety-nine percent of daily use, and it needs no clearance at all.
Can I get a screen on a tilt-and-turn window?
Yes, but it mounts on the exterior, because the sash swings inward. Fixed exterior mesh screens or retractable roller screens both work. It is a genuine difference from a casement, and worth knowing before you order.
What is a thermal break?
A non-conductive barrier inside the frame that interrupts the path heat would otherwise take from the warm inside face to the cold outside face. Without one, the frame itself becomes a radiator pointed at the street. In a multi-chamber PVC or aluminium-clad system, the chambers themselves do this work — which is why we name the chamber count on every series.
